I think I have finally understood what the term ' Multiplex movie' means.
It means a movie that does not have a fixed story line and keeps jumping here and there, and if you do not understand it, you are said to be ignorant!
I am reminded of the story of the Emperor's new clothes - where the tailor decides that he has had enough, and mentions that people will see the new clothes only if they are intelligent. Else, the king will appear as going around without clothes. For fear of appearing foolish, all the courtiers praise the clothes, saying that these are the best clothes they have ever seen! Finally, a small kid shouts out that the king is not wearing anything and then everyone agrees!
Most of the 'multiplex' movies are like that! You sit thru a couple of hours (max) and come out exclamining ' What a movie!'.
It is exactly that - what a movie?? meaning that the movie elicits no other response.
Mithya has been made by Planman films - an offshoot of Arindam Chaudhuri's group and this probably is their first movie. The film is nice. I enjoyed watching it and specially enjoyed Ranvir Shorey's performance - This guy is awesome!
But then, the film has a weird kind of story, where everyone either kills or is killed (sometimes both!)
With a cast of Naseeruddin Shah, Kallu Mama, Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak, Neha Dhupia and others, this film has the right people in the right roles and director Rajat Kapoor does a superb job of narrating the story of VK (a Mumbai don) crisply in under 2 hrs. I will not say more as doing so will make me reveal the plot to you; which I will not.
No where does the film stick to the expected patterns and yet manages to keep the audience glued to their seats. For that, the entire crew and cast needs to be appreciated
*Applause*
However, coming back to the Emperor's new clothes, 'What a movie!!'. Rediff gave it 3.5* ( no mean feat that!) and several other websites gave the film over 4*; and that is absolutely fine.
What I fail to understand is the idea behind this movie. Why was the movie made? Did the Writer and Director decide beforehand that this was going to be a 'Multiplex' movie - meaning that only 'Intelligent' people should understand this? Or did it turn out that way?
Anyway, I loved the film (for fear of appearing ignorant!) and the next time a multiplex movie is released, I'll queue up on the first day and get clapping.
If you have not watched Mithya, get it on DVD and watch it. Join the elite club of intelligent film goers.
